Red Roses True Love - Guest Heart Thursday

I love red roses--this postcard is especially beautiful don't you think?  Can you find the hearts in the roses?   They're kind of hard to see--but they're there!

Cute Baby Things - Pink Saturday

My Grandmother saved every one of our birth announcements and shower invitations.  This shower invitation was for one of my cousins, who, of course is old enough to be a grandfather himself.  These small cards are so cute.  This one is only 2.5x3.5 inches!  I'm so glad Grammie saved them all.

America's First Thanksgiving - Postcard Friendship Friday #39

What a joyful Thanksgiving it was!  I look around the room savoring this time with my family and wonder what those who first came to our country on the Mayflower would think of our Thanksgiving celebrations today.  How brave those first explorers were.

The first winter was so bad most of the colonists remained on the ship, where they suffered from exposure, scurvy and disease. Only half of the Mayflower’s original passengers and crew lived to see spring.

When the settlers moved ashore, they received an surprising visit from an Abenaki Indian who spoke English. Several days later, the Native American returned with Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe who had been kidnapped by an English sea captain and sold into slavery.  Squanto had escaped his captors, finally making his way back to America.  Despite his experiences as a prisoner, Squanto took pity upon the Pilgrims and taught them how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants. He also helped the settlers forge an alliance with the Wampanoag Indian tribe -- which lasted for more than 50 years.

In November 1621, after a bumper crop of corn and other staples, the grateful Pilgrims organized a great feast and invited their Native American friends to join them. Now remembered as American’s “first Thanksgiving,” the festival lasted for three days.

Beach Dreams

Sissy and I are off to the beach--though I don't think it will be as balmy as this--we're expecting snow down to the water's edge.  My poor husband will be "baching' it over the next few days.   I'm so looking forward to time with my darling little Sis.  See you next Tuesday!

Noble Lincoln - Postcard Friendship Friday #38

The Gettysburg Address was given in Pennsylvania at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery on  Thursday, November 19, 1863, by one of America's most beloved Presidents, Abraham Lincoln.

The United States was still in the grip of a terrible civil war when President Lincoln spoke those famous words.  His carefully crafted address came to be regarded as one of the greatest speeches in American history. In just over two minutes, Lincoln invoked the principles of human equality found in the Declaration of Independence and redefined the Civil War as a struggle not merely for the Union, but as "a new birth of freedom which would bring true equality to all of its citizens."  The fight for freedom for all peoples continues here to this very day.

I have a special place in my heart for this wise man.  Not only was he one of the greatest men who ever lived, He is a distant relative of mine.

I Think You're Terrific - Guest Heart Thursday

This is another Valentine's Day Card from my collection.  Made in the USA in the late 1940's, this delightful card is itself terrific!  This girl reminds me of someone I knew once upon a time.  I like the way the artist drew her folded hands and the way her eyes twinkle--I am sure she's just a little mischievous.

Angel Prayers - Pink Saturday

I love this picture--it is one which inspires me.  This  artist is just amazing--oh to be able to draw like THIS!

Yesterday morning I read about Angels in the Psalms, found in the Old Testament of the Bible.  "Praise the Lord, you His angels, you mighty ones who do His bidding, who obey His word.  Praise the Lord, all His heavenly hosts, you His servants who do His will.  Praise the Lord, all His works everywhere in His dominion.  Praise the Lord, Oh my soul."  Psalm 103:20-22

I like the idea of God's angels here on earth doing His will--watching over our children and people who love Him.  I have seen the invisible hands of angels more than once in our travels.  I am so glad God sends them to protect us!

Thanskgiving - Postcard Friendship Friday #37

It is November, the month in which Americans celebrate Thanksgiving.  But on November 12, we also honor veterans on Veteran's Day--thanking them for their service to our country.

Today I am thankful for my Grandfather who served in WW1, for Dad who was captured by Nazi's in WW2, for Uncle Joe who served in Vietnam, for Uncle Kelly who served in Korea, for my brother in law Guy who served in Desert Storm, and for my nephew David who serves our country today.  But I am thankful--not just for these who are precious to me, but to the thousands of men and women across the world--from many countries--who sacrifice daily to keep the world safe.

THANK YOU.

Turkey Day - Postcard Friendship Friday #36

Isn't this just the cutest postcard?  I think that child should be a little scared --That bird is bigger than he is!  One gets the idea the boy is dreaming about something...maybe Thanksgiving dinner?

Did you know President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving as an official holiday in the United States on October 3, 1863?  It is another great reason Lincoln is one of my favorite presidents!   Sarah Hale, editor of Godey's Lady's Magazine lobbied for 17 years to declare Thanksgiving as a national holiday.  By 1916, Thanksgiving was referred to in writings as Turkey Day--And I thought that was a modern title!

Did you know President Franklin D. Roosevelt actually attempted to move the Thanksgiving to earlier in November? As a depression recovery strategy, he thought the change would encourage a longer Christmas shopping season. But the idea didn't fly and was shut down by Congress.  In 1941 the official date was declared permanently as the fourth Thursday in November.

Give Me a Tumble - Guest Heart Thursday

I've never really liked clowns--and this sneaky looking fellow is no exception.  But this morning, his dastardly looks, combined with that, er, funny slogan, hit my funnybone.  This pop-up Valentine's Day Card is printed on very thick paper.  It was probably from the 1930's and was made in the USA.
