Aunts and Uncles' Day -Postcard Friendship Friday #178

Though no one seems to know how the holiday started, today is Aunts and Uncles' Day.  I like celebrating this holiday.  I have so many lovely memories which include my wonderful Aunts and Uncles.  I especially miss Uncle Jody.  He always wore a cowboy hat.  He was long and lean--with a beautiful craggy face creased with a bright smile.  His eyes were blue and often crinkled with laughter.  He always found time for his small nieces and nephews.

We all adored him.  He would fold his long rangy frame down onto the heels of his well-worn boots to look into our faces at our level. I loved the sound of his laughter.  I loved his sweet soft heart.  He was a poet.  I can still hear his voice as he read The Cremation of Sam Magee, by Robert W. Service.

Now I am an Aunt myself.  I often find myself thanking God for my small nieces and nephews.  They are all so different--like flowers.  Each has his, or her own charming sparkle.

I have spent this past month watching my youngest niece each day.  I was there when she was born and am so blessed to spend time with her--she has, of course, enchanted my heart. Today we will pick blackberries and make a pie.  We will eat blackberries until our tongues turn blue and laugh together as we roll out the dough and get flour on our noses. Today will be a wonderful day!

Happy Aunts and Uncles Day and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

Best Lovin' -Guest Heart Thursday

I have a ton of wonderful old Valentine cards in my collection.  I love looking at them, and sharing them here.  Though I believe I have posted this card before, I do so again today because looking at this one made me smile--and it seemed perfect for Guest Heart Thursday!

Happy Flitch Day -Postcard Friendship Friday #177

In  England, since the year 1104, married couples who could prove they'd been faithful and loving to one another for one year, were awarded half a pig--which was known as a "flitch of bacon."

Hence the old saying, "bring home the bacon."

This old English custom was eventually turned into a holiday called Flitch Day, which is celebrated on July 19th.  There are still flitch "trials" today in some places, but they are only held once every four years.

Happy Flitch Day!

Birds and Roses -Postcard Friendship Friday #176

We have had so many birds in our yard this year.  There's a flock of Goldfinches, a small red-headed wood pecker, a colorful gross beak, cedar wax wings, a scrub jay, house wrens and another teeny brown bird the size of my thumb.  I have no idea what kind that little fellow might be.  He's shaped like an egg adorned with a beak and miniscule wings.

I hope you are all having a lovely summer.  It has been beautiful here in Oregon.  No rain--lots of sunshine and bearable temperatures.  Almost like living in heaven, when the rain stops!

Have a beautiful day everyone!

You Inspire Me -Guest Heart Thursday

I was thinking about what a wonderful thing it is to have sisters.  Clytie has been an inspiration to me for many many years.  Years ago, when I found this beautiful postcard with the ornate "C" and the word Amor, it seemed to be a perfect fit for today's Guest Heart Thursday.   This will be the second time I've posted this particular postcard--but truly--it is perfect for my darling Sister.

Sissy, thank you for listening, for loving me--for being one of my greatest inspirations over the years.  I am so blessed to have you as my sister.  ((hugs))

Happy Guest Heart Thursday!

Happy Fourth of July -Postcard Friendship Friday #175

I apologize for getting this up a day late.  We have had a lot of folks from out of town and then I fell ill later in the afternoon and evening.  I am much better this morning.

We so enjoyed the Fourth of July this year, the parade was full of wonderful things, like antique cars, hometown floats, bands, singers, local princesses, horses and area businesses.

But the moment which stands out to me was when a big army truck full of veterans came by.  I cheered, hooted and hollered until I was hoarse.  I was shouting, "Thank you!"  One of the elderly gentlemen looked me full in the face and saluted me.  I bent my head putting my hands together--and with tears looked back into his eyes.  I am sure there were tears in his, too.

You see, this is the first Fourth of July without my Daddy, who was a WW2 veteran.  In that moment, Dad looked out of that dear man's face and smiled at me.  It was a beautiful reverent meaningful moment.

God bless our veterans and all those who fight for the cause of Freedom.

Granite Mountain Hot Shots Tribute

We were horrified and heart broken to hear that nineteen members of the Granite Mountain "Hot Shot" fire crew were caught in a fire which was blasting out of control in a forest near Phoenix, Arizona.  Caught by the approaching flames this group of elite firefighters employed their emergency fire shelters.  The blaze took the lives of all nineteen of these brave souls.

This loss hits close to home.  One of these men was an alumnus of my own high school in West Linn, Ore.  John Percin, Jr., a 24-year-old firefighter was among those who lost their lives.  It is a small world and my heart and prayers go out to his family.

Prescott Fire Chief Dan Fraijo said the nineteen firefighters were a part of the city's own fire department.  "We grieve for the families. We grieve for the department. We grieve for the city," he said at a news conference Sunday evening. "We're devastated. We just lost 19 of the finest people you'll ever meet."

Our tears--our hearts and prayers go out to the families and friends of these brave firefighters.  God bless you dear ones.
