Surprise! -Postcard Friendship Friday #192

Sergei Sergeevich Solomko is new to me.  He was one of the great artists of Russia.  His work was extraordinary.  Though I can find examples of his artwork all over the internet, I am having a hard time discovering anything of his personal life and history, other than he was born in Russia and lived between 1867 and 1928.

I would LOVE to know more about him.  If anyone out there has additional information about this wonderful artist, I would like to hear from you.  And a big hello to my Russian visitors.

He's a great artist, being able to create those intricate details on the clothes and the roses. This is a treat to the eyes, as I'm having rose wine treat to the tummy yesterday.

Happy weekend Beth!

I hadn't heard of that artist before. I wonder whether there is any of his art in the Russian Art Museum of Minneapolis.

Solomko, Sergey Sergeyevich (1867 - 1928) - Russian painter, graphic artist, watercolorist. Creativity Solomko reached us mainly due to the pre-revolutionary open letters (postcards). Perhaps, in the history of Russian art there is not one such artist whose work looks at the specialists would be as polar opposites. His work is of extreme antipathy like contemporary art critics and art historians in the Soviet era. Those and others accused him of "dry goods realism", in decadence, vulgarity, trying to "please the tastes of the crowd." However, there were many admirers of his unique artistic style. The world of images created by the artist may or may not like, but it would be unfair to deny the artist in his personality. As a professional artist began in Solomko complex, pivotal era of Russian art. The authority of the Wanderers was still unquestioned, but the general public has become bored of their small bytovizma in genre painting. Such a situation could not but lead to the emergence of artistic communities, advocating a fundamentally new ideals.

In 1910, S. Solomko received a large inheritance and settled vParizhe on the street Donfer Rochereau, 75-77. Continued to paint watercolors, illustrated books published by A. Ferro and other Parisian publishers. Created a series of postcards on the themes of Russian antiquities publishing Lapin. In 1921 he participated in the exhibition "Artists of the Imperial Academy of Arts in Petrograd" in the gallery Magellan. The last work became the illustrations for the book "Trophies" JM Heredia (1927). He was a member of the Company and Mutual Assistance Charity Russian artists in Paris (Society them. Turgenev). In 1927, due to his severe illness, the company held several charity nights in his favor. Sergey Solomko died in Russian nursing home and is buried at St. Genevieve-des-Bois.
